Common App Essay Word Limit and UCAS Personal Statement Character Limit

By Moeed Hussain, founder of Toolsona · Updated

The Common App personal essay has a maximum of 650 words (and a minimum of 250). The UCAS personal statement is limited to 4,000 characters including spaces, not words. Paste your draft into a word and character counter to check both before you submit, and leave a small margin because application portals can count slightly differently from word processors.

The limits at a glance

ApplicationLimitCounted as
Common App personal essay (US)250–650 wordsWords
UCAS personal statement (UK)4,000 charactersCharacters including spaces

For UK entry from 2026, UCAS replaced the single open essay with three questions that share the 4,000-character total. Check the current format on the UCAS website before you start writing.

How to check your count

  1. Write your draft in any editor, then copy all of it.
  2. Paste it into the word counter. It shows words, characters with spaces and characters without spaces at the same time.
  3. For the Common App, use the Words figure. For UCAS, use Characters (which include spaces).
  4. Paste the final text into the application portal and confirm that it accepts it, since its count is the one that matters.

Words vs characters: rough conversions

In typical English prose, a word plus the space after it averages about 6 characters. So 4,000 characters is roughly 650 words, and 650 words is roughly 3,900–4,200 characters. Writing with many long words uses up a character limit faster, so always check the real number rather than relying on the estimate.

How to cut an essay that is too long

  • Remove filler phrases: "in order to" → "to", "due to the fact that" → "because", "I believe that" → delete.
  • Cut repeated points: if two sentences make the same point, keep the stronger one.
  • Trim the opening: first drafts often warm up for a paragraph before the real story starts.
  • Prefer one strong example to three brief ones; specific detail is more memorable than a list.
  • Check the keyword list in the word counter for words you repeat too often.
