How to remove the background from a photo
Removing a photo background by hand means tracing around the subject with an eraser, which takes minutes and still leaves rough edges around hair. This background remover does it in one step. An AI model looks at the whole picture, works out which pixels belong to the person, pet or product, and makes everything else transparent. The edge is soft rather than a hard outline, so hair and fur look natural.
- Choose the photo. A clear subject that stands apart from the background gives the cleanest result.

A transparent PNG is larger than a JPG of the same picture. If a form has a size limit in KB, resize the result with the Image Resizer in KB.
Free, full size and private
Many background removers give you a small preview for free and charge for the full-resolution download, or add a watermark. Here the download is the same size as your photo (up to 4,096 pixels on the longest side), with no watermark and no account. Because the processing happens in your browser, the photo is never uploaded. That matters for pictures of children, ID documents and signatures.
Tips for a cleaner cut-out
- Plain backgrounds work best. A subject in front of a wall is easier to separate than one in a crowd.
- Keep the subject sharp. Blurry edges from movement or low light make the outline less precise.
- Watch out for matching colours. A white shirt against a white wall can lose part of the shirt.
- Crop first for small subjects. If the subject fills only a small part of the frame, crop closer before removing the background.

On iOS 16 or later, open the photo in Photos, touch and hold the subject, and choose Copy or Share to lift it from the background. For a transparent PNG file or a white background, open this page in Safari and use the tool above.
How do I remove a background in Canva?
Canva's Background Remover is part of its paid plans. On the free plan, remove the background here, download the transparent PNG and upload it to Canva as an image.
How do I remove the background from a picture in PowerPoint?
Select the picture, open the Picture Format tab and choose Remove Background. Use Mark Areas to Keep or Mark Areas to Remove to correct it, then press Keep Changes. For hair or complex edges, the tool above usually gives a cleaner cut-out.
Can I remove the background from a signature?
Yes. Photograph or scan the signature on white paper, remove the background and download the PNG. The paper disappears, so you can place the signature on documents. To make it small enough for a form, use the Image Resizer afterwards.
Can I use it for a passport photo?
Usually not. Many passport services, including GOV.UK and the US State Department, reject photos that have been digitally edited, including a replaced background. Take a new photo against a plain, light-coloured wall instead.
Can it remove the background from a GIF?
It works on still images. For a GIF, only the first frame is used, so the result is a still PNG, not an animation.
